Knitting Hedgehogs

Do you ever revisit a pattern? I first knitted some Little Oddment Hedgehogs many years ago. I’d quite forgotten about them, until recently when I suddenly had the desire to knit a tiny hedgehog again.

I’d just finished knitting quite a few large projects and was looking for something small, quick and fun. And so I cast on a hedgehog. These little cuties are quick to knit and I had finished my first hedgehog in an evening. So I cast on another.

I’m enjoying knitting these Hedgehogs so much, I’ve decided to knit up a basket full. The ones pictured are currently making a cute display in my Studio - they bring a smile to my face every time I walk past them. But what will I do with the basket of Hedgehogs, you ask?

I’ve decided to sell them. You see, the other thing I am doing at the moment, aside from knitting lots of hedgehogs in my spare time, is taking part in Pawgust.

Pawgust is a fundraising challenge run by Guide Dogs Australia each August. Basically, you commit to walking 30 minutes every day with your four legged friend no matter the weather, to raise money for Guide Dogs. Breeding, raising and training a Guide Dog costs in excess of $50,000 and so many people need them.

I think Pawgust is such a great idea - along with helping make a real difference to people’s lives, it’s great fun to for you and your dog! Bambi and I are certainly enjoying ourselves so far!

Anyway - what does that have to do with a basket of Hedgehogs? I’m selling the Hedgies to help raise money! $10 from each Hedgehog will be donated directly to Guide Dogs via Pawgust. This way it’s clear where the donation goes, and you know that the foundation is receiving every single bit.

If you would like to order a Hedgehog you can here.

If you would like to make a Hedgehog (they are super fun!) the project details are below.

At any rate, I hope you have enjoyed these cute little things as much I am!

Project Details

Pattern: Little Oddment Hedgehog by Julie Williams
Yarn: No. 4 Organic Wool + Nettles DK in Chocolate for the body and Nettle Sock Yarn in Sand for the face.
Notes: For the tiny hedgehog I used 3.25mm and 2.75mm needles, and a strand of each yarn.
For the medium hedgehog, I held an extra strand of Nettle Sock in Chocolate alongside the No.4 on 4.5mm needles for the body. For the medium hedgehog’s face, I held two strands of Nettle Sock together on a 3.25mm needle.

Until next time, happy knitting!

Sarah
