How to: Make a Tassel

Nordic Christmas Gnomes -22.jpg

My newest pattern - Nordic Christmas Gnome - is finished off with a silver yarn tassel on the end of his hat. I love making tassels; they’re easier to create than a pompom and also use less yarn. Whether you’re making a Nordic Gnome or a different project, I hope you enjoy this tutorial!

(As this tutorial was made for my pattern, you’ll find the instructions listed first and the list of materials at the end).

Make a Tassel

1.  Wrap yarn around card 28 times. Cut yarn.

2.  Cut a 30cm length of yarn and tie around the yarn at the top of the cardboard. Leave the excess yarn from the tie intact as you will use this to attach to the hat later.

3.  Use a pair of scissors to cut the other ends of the yarn and remove the cardboard.

4.  Cut a 35cm length of yarn and wrap it around the body of the tassel approx. 1/3 of the way up the top. Wrap it tightly several times before knotting to tie off.

5.  Thread the ends of the ‘wrap’ yarn onto a darning needle and pull the yarn down inside the tassel. Trim the ends of the tassel to be all one length. Your tassel is now ready to attach to the hat.

Attach the tassel to the hat: With the tassel tie ends threaded onto a darning needle, pull the tie through the tip of the hat. Knot the tie ends off securely on the inside of the hat until the tassel is secure.

If you’re using this tassel making tutorial for another project, you’ll need the following materials:

4ply Yarn
6.5cm cardboard square
Darning/wool needle

Happy making!
